New face in the Guidance Office

February 2015

I mentioned Mrs. Racheal McGraw in an earlier post.  Mrs. McGraw is a school counseling intern from Husson University working with Mrs. O'Connell for the remainder of the year.  This will be once a week on Wednesdays.   Mrs. McGraw will be supervised and working with Mrs. O'Connell in all activities.  The extra support for students is exciting.  Mrs. McGraw wrote this article to help inform parents of our work together.

Racheal M. McGraw

School Counselor Intern

I am a school counseling graduate student currently working in a school counselor capacity at a school in Bangor and as an intern at Leonard Middle School. As a school-counseling intern, I offer services that are aligned with the standards and practices of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. The program offered at Leonard Middle School is comprehensive and seeks to meet the needs of all students, regardless of multicultural, developmental and diverse factors. It is my goal to meet the needs of all students and provide services to enhance their academic, career, and personal/social areas of growth.

The LMS school counseling program is comprehensive and includes a variety of practices that support optimal growth of all students academically, socially and emotionally. These services include individual and group counseling, classroom guidance, crisis interventions, preventative techniques, academic reinforcement and support services.  These services target three specific areas of needs for students:  academic, career, and personal/social development. As an intern, my position is not designed to provide long-term counseling to students. However, the Leonard Middle School program partners with community agencies equipped to address the needs of our students and families outside of the school environment.

Education and Experience

I received an A.S. degree in Business Administration from Husson College and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Maine, Orono. I am expected to graduate from Husson University in May of 2015 with an M.S. degree in School Counseling.  I have a background in mental health, working with the at risk youth population for several years. During this experience, I worked closely with youth who had severe behavioral issues and mental health diagnosis.
